Young Bayreuth scientist at Nobel Laureate Meeting

Overview

University of Bayreuth, UBTaktuell from 24 April 2024

Berin Bećić, a physics master's student at the University of Bayreuth, is traveling to the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in summer 2024. There he will meet more than 30 Nobel Laureates and the selected international elite of young physicists and spend a week discussing topics relating to the fundamentals, applied research and future of physics.

Berin Bećić

More than 30 Nobel Prize winners will meet around 650 young physicists from over 90 nations for a week from June 30, 2024. Among them is Berin Bećić from the University of Bayreuth. He is studying for a Master's degree in Physics and is enrolled in the additional Biological Physics course, but has already made a name for himself in his discipline.

Bećić discovered his passion for physics at school, for which he took part in numerous national and international physics competitions. In high school, he took part in the European Physics Olympiad in Moscow - and won bronze. In 2019, he was a member of the University of Bayreuth's physics student research team at the TAO Student Research Center under the direction of Prof. Dr. Walter Zimmermann. He won gold with the team at the German Young Physicists' Tournament (GYPT) in Bad Honnef. In the same year, after further coaching by the Student Research Center, he took part in the International Young Physicists' Tournament (IYPT) in Warsaw, where Bećić and his team finished as runners-up.

Participation in the competitions and being coached at the Student Research Center awakened Bećić's desire to study physics at the University of Bayreuth. "We were coached by two physics students, which gave me an insight into studying physics," says Bećić. In 2019, he began his bachelor's degree in physics. He coached himself at the Student Research Center and is now a master's student at the Chair of Theoretical Physics VI - Biofluid Simulation and Modeling under the direction of Prof. Dr. Stephan Gekle. He was the one who suggested Bećić's participation in the Nobel Laureate Meeting and supported him in the application process. "Berin is not only an exceptionally motivated and talented physics student, he is also socially committed. He regularly supports other members of the working group with technical and scientific problems. This looking beyond his own nose is an important selection criterion for the Nobel Laureate Meeting," says Gekle.

Bećić is now looking forward to the literally unique opportunity to talk to real Nobel Prize winners, as participation in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting is only possible once. He is equally looking forward to meeting the young physicists and exchanging impressions and experiences. "There will be young scientists from all over the world, not just Master's students, but also doctoral students and post-docs. I'm looking forward to hearing testimonials from people who are already a bit further along than me," says Bećić.

After the meeting, he will return to Bayreuth connected with other researchers as a Lindau Alumnus. He expects to complete his Master's degree in the summer semester of 2024 and wants to remain as a doctoral student at Prof. Gekle's department, where he will continue to work on the flow behavior of epithelial and blood cells and the influence of vessel walls.

About the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting:

Since 1951, the week-long conference has been held annually, alternating between the three scientific Nobel Prize disciplines - physics, chemistry or physiology/medicine. Around 30-40 Nobel Prize winners come together in Lindau to meet around 600 young scientists from all over the world. Various formats, such as discussions, lectures, science walks or life lectures, enable both professional and personal exchange. Participation in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting is only possible once for the young researchers. Afterwards, they return as Lindau Alumni and thus become members of the Lindau Alumni Network. The network provides further education and inspiration as well as further exchange and networking.
