In the spirit of the "Bologna declaration" we offer a study programme in Physics which consists of two consecutive parts, leading to the the internationally recognized B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees.
The first part consists of a three-year course leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Physics. The students have the opportunity to choose one of three thematic priorities: General Physics, Biological Physics, and Technical Physics. Graduates of the B.Sc. programme, having acquired the skills of employability, may leave university or they may continue in the Master programme.
The second part is a two-year course leading to the Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Physics. For admission, graduation from a B.Sc. course in Physics is required.
Both the Bachelor and the Master programmes are fully modularized and use the European Credit Transfer System. Most classes ar taught in German, part of the Master programme in English.
In addition to the Physics programmes we have programmes that lead to the State Examination for teachers at secondary schools, both level I ("Realschule") and II ("Gymnasium").
The traditional five-year course leading to a "Diplom-Physik" degree is no longer offered. Students currently inscribed will be able to finish their studies, however, there will be no new admissions. It is our understanding that the holder of an M.Sc. degree will have received at least the same level of professional education as the holder of the traditional "Diplom-Physik" degree.
Admission to the doctorate programme is possible for holders of a M.Sc. degree. Details are laid down in the regulations (Promotionsordnung) of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics.
